Families all across Haiti are dealing with unprecedented food insecurity. In an attempt to address this crisis for families in Grande Saline and with the help and support of donors, Health for Haiti recently doubled the size of our successful community garden. We are now in the season for growing rice and there has been a great deal of activity to prepare the garden and get the rice off to a promising start.
First the land was cleared, prepared for rice, and leveled. Preparation for rice involves digging irrigation trenches and creating sections of land so that the fields can be properly watered. Leveling is necessary to maintain a uniform water depth as standing water is required for proper growth of the rice. The rice seeds were soaked to soften the seed coat and stimulate germination. The seedlings were grown in a special nursery area for a few weeks before being transplanted to the field. Planting the rice by hand is a meticulous process, as proper spacing between the rice plants is crucial to allow adequate growth.

On the critical seedling transplant day, the farmers who work in these fields were joined by community members who volunteered their time and energy for this critical labor intensive step in growing the rice. Working side-by-side with the farmers were teachers, parents of school children, and some current and former students. The work was not easy, but it was fueled by a shared dream: food for the children, pride and peace of mind for parents, and the opportunity for the community will move one step closer to self-sufficiency.

It is important to acknowledge that this community garden is not charity, it is a tool for local empowerment. Every carefully cultivated rice seedling that is planted represents a commitment to a better future. Each crop of rice harvested means that fewer local families will go hungry. And every drop of sweat shed in the fields is a reminder that hope is not given; it is built through faith, perseverance, and hard work.
The rice garden also reflects what happens when generous sharing meets determination. With the support of Health for Haiti donors, the community in Grande Saline has access to suitable land, tools, water, and seeds. But it is the focused effort of the community and their belief in a better tomorrow that transforms these basic resources into powerful change. Together through this partnership we are proving that progress is possible even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

We still have a long way and a lot of hard work to go before the rice is ready to harvest, but as the seedlings take root, are watered, and grow under the Haitian sun, so too does the community’s belief in a better tomorrow. With each harvest from the community garden, families are reminded that when we work together as global neighbors and friends, we can grow much more than just food. Through our partnership we are cultivating hope for a future filled with dignity, strength, and possibility.
Your support makes this project possible. Thank you for helping to grow a strong and empowered community in Grande Saline.
